ANCHOR: Over in the Ukraine, you can still find a wide variety of traditional handicrafts at some of the spring festivals around the country. NTD's Ukrainian team talked to some of the craftspeople at a fair in the Ukrainian cultural capital, Lvov. Here's more: STORY: Natalia has made dolls for more than 20 years, and using all natural materials, including: flax, juniper, pine, linden and clay. She says she doesn't use needles or cotton, but only the nodule, which protects the dolls from evil. [Natalia Saraphian, Doll Maker] female: "Once I heard the information about the dolls which are made in China from dangerous plastic. I felt such pain in my heart because I have my own grandchildren. So I made a doll from natural materials". In of the center of the Square of Art, there was also a potter, entertaining children and adults with master classes in pottery. All of these craft require a great deal patience and skill to master, and many have been passed down for generations. Glass blowing, in particular, in considered by many Ukrainians to be the most difficult craft in the world. And one member of the Ideas Museum says there are only a few masters of glass blowing left in the Ukraine. [Olga Oblovatska, Museum of Ideas Member] female: "According the tradition each color -- is separately welded glass, and there is no way to duplicate it. Each piece is unique. No two pieces are identical". The Ukrainian capital Kyiv will host a similar handicraft festival soon. NTD News, Lvov, Ukraine

Oct 3, 2010 - I just discovered handicraft on YouTube but I was dismayed to find no comments of appreciation. Man lost skills in the hand long ago. Peddlers are trying to fit machine-made things as handicraft. I request YouTube to remove them and keep the real artists in forefront. For example, wooden furniture are always machine made. But this page shows remarkable pieces of art! Sadly no one takes notice. Well, I start the process of appreciating the unsung heroes of human society. Is someone listening?
